Vector an image with Photoshop Elements 5.0 or 6.0? Tutorial? Help?!?

For my photoshop class final, I have to photoshop an image an then have it laser engraved on glass or tile. Because the laser engraver cannot pick up fine details like freckles or hair strands I need to make an clip art like picture (vector image). The program I normally use to photoshop is Elements 5 or 6. However on most of the tutorials I have seen to vector an image in photoshop, it requires the use of the Pen tool, which elements does NOT have. So, is it possible to vector an image and if so is there a tutorial where I can learn how or could you please explain how to do this (step by step)!?!?! Thanks!!

It doesn't need to be a vector image for your purpose but it does need to be high contrast with well defined edges so chose the type of image carefully then try Filter - Stylize - Find Edges then convert the image to Grayscale and then Sharpen Edges for a more pronounced effect. You may need to tidy it up a bit but that should go some way to achieving a result. Hope that helps.Vector an image with Photoshop Elements 5.0 or 6.0? Tutorial? Help?!?
If Elements doesn't have the pen tool, then there is really no way to create vectors in it. And technically you are creating vectors that are then rasterized when you flatten the image. The best way to create vectors from a Photoshop image is to take it into Illustrator and run Live Trace on it (but always with Trace Options open so you can test the settings). Or to trace with the pen tool. Illustrator is a vector program, Photoshop is not.

However, what you might try doing is playing around with some of the filters in Photoshop; I'm pretty sure that you should have Posterize in Elements, which will get you a simplified image with fewer colors.

Hope that helps. Maybe someone else will have a better idea.

How can I make my tutorials about vectors fun?

make it fun by telling some jokes every now and then, and don't push the kids too hard on getting the right answer. let them relax and make them comfortable, then get online and search for a game relating to what you're trying to teach, if you can't find one, then search for a movie or online video related to the topic. Show the video and then ask if they have any questions. How can I make my tutorials about vectors fun?
You didn't mention what age you are teaching, so this might be too advanced, but I think you could incorporate it to any age level.

These two artists work with vector space, multi-dimensions etc... I think that sometimes getting a visual representation of an abstract concept, along with some real world examples of its uses, is always helpful.
